Landranger no 168
Leave the car park, turning right back on to the High street and then turning left down the high street towards the church.
Continue down the High Street on the right hand side passing through the Churchyard of St. Andrews Church and keeping ahead ignoring the path to the right.
Pass through the gate at the end of the churchyard and turn left, crossing the road to a track opposite (footpath no:20). Follow the track downhill and on reaching the end turn right along a smaller path with black metal railings on your left.
Keep a look out to your left, you will soon come to an information board, this is the site of the old church and monastery which is now scheduled as a national monument. The Earls Colne Society has taken the occasion of the second millennium to record these events and to place a cross (based on a design by Constantinople just before the end of the first millennium) beyond which the site of the monastery can be viewed.
On reaching the end of this footpath you need to turn left along the A1124, (a bit of advice on crossing here! Follow the footpath, bearing left until it ends by the wall, from here you can see in both directions along the A1124). Once you have crossed, continue along the A1124 towards White Colne, passing The Riverside Restaurant Restaurant and crossing the bridge over the River Colne. Keep a look out to your left and cross over just before the houses start on the left - hand side of the road, heading for the metal gate.
Pass through the gate to the left of the metal gate and follow this track to its end and then keep ahead following the waymark along a fenced path.. Turn right at the corner of the fence and waymark and head slightly uphill towards a gap in the hedge ahead. Pass through the gap and cross the railway path and go through the gap opposite to enter a field, maintaining your direction and heading towards the right hand side of the small copse ahead.
On reaching the road, turn left and after a few yards turn right crossing a stile and keeping ahead with the fence on your right and when the farm comes into view on the opposite side of this meadow, head towards it and a waymark in the centre of the meadow. Follow the waymark towards a stile and a gap in the hedge opposite, cross the stile and keep ahead towards the trees on the opposite side of the field, (Keep a look out for Colne Park Monument off to your right.)
On reaching the end of the field, cross the farm road to the waymark directly opposite and head into the trees (ignoring the larger track to your right) into the wood, once you have passed through the trees follow the path as it bears right at a telegraph pole and follow the right hand edge of a field.
Follow this pleasant path as it lazily bears left with the field edge passing an ancient wood to your right, until you reach a waymark on a telegraph pole taking you along a (usually) distinct path towards a black barn up to your left.
On reaching the farm buildings follow the waymark between the buildings, passing the black barn on your right and keeping ahead soon emerging onto a country road. Turn left and follow this road for a short distance.
Turn right at the waymark on your right where the hedge
ends and opposite the house on your left and follow the right hand edge
of a field with hedge on your right. Pause here to take in the wonderful
view across the valley towards Earls Colne.
On reaching the the corner of the field pass through the gate ahead and turn left following the left hand edge with hedge on your left heading for a gap and metal gates in the corner of the field.
After passing through this gate keep straight ahead along the top of the field go through another gate and continue ahead with the fence on your left and head downhill to the corner of the filed heading for a gate and stile. Cross stile and following the waymarks bear right and head for the stile to the right of the left hand gate.
Climb the stile and follow the edge of the field with the hedgerow on your right, follow the field round as it curves to the left until you reach a metal gate and stile in the corner of the field. Cross the stile and turn left following the left hand edge of the field to soon cross another two stiles and to emerge on a road, here, turn right.
Follow this road as it soon turns first left and then right, at the right hand turn keep ahead following the footpath straight on and passing "Mill Cottage" to your left. Follow the left hand edge of the field to the corner of the field and cross the two stiles ahead, cross over the railway path and climb the stile beyond. Following the waymarks, bear right across the meadow and towards the footbridge over the River Colne.
Cross over the footbridge and keep ahead uphill following a faint path, passing a lake to your left and crossing the Golf Course. On reaching the top of the hill and the edge of the golf course continue along the path the tree lined path soon emerging in a small cul-de-sac.
Keep ahead out of the cul-de-sac, crossing a road passing
a graveyard on your left.
Look out for house no:16 on your left and a postbox on your right and turn left along the footpath alongside no:16. On emerging from the footpath keep ahead out of the small cul-de-sac and turn right and follow this road soon turning right again back into the car park.
