Cats protection is a national charity which was initially set up in 1927. It has evolved over the years into the country's largest and most go-ahead cat charity. As a rescue organisation we have 20 purpose built Shelters and 250 voluntary Branches throughout the UK.

Ninety per cent of the charity's rescue work is carried out by 5000 volunteers who spend six million hours caring for cats. Over 75,000 cats arc re-homed and another 165.000 helped each year by cats protection.

The aims of the organisation are three fold.

  1. To rescue stray and unwanted cats and kittens. Rehabilitate and re-home them where possible.
  2. To encourage the neutering of all cats and kittens not required for breeding.
  3. To inform the public on the care of cats and kittens.

Colne Valley Branch

The local branch was set up following a meeting which was held in Braintree during the latter part of 2000. It covers the postal districts of CO9, CM8 and CM7( Halstead, Braintree and Witham).

We started the branch with just 3 pens but through the hard work of our supporters and fundraising team we have been able to increase this to 9. We also have an 8 place hospital/maternity unit at our centre in Sible Hedingham together with a 2 place isolation unit. In addition we have 2 private pens which can be used for boarding with the donations going entirely to the Branch. Backing up the centre there is a small band of home fosterers who provide short term care in their own homes for individual cats.

2005 statistics

We took in 194 cats and kittens

We re homed 188 cats and kitten

Sponsor a Pen

You know we do everything we can for all the cats in our care. This means we constantly need funds to run our busy Branch. So we are looking for sponsors for our cat pens. For just £4 per month you could sponsor a pen. We invite you to sponsor a pen rather than an individual cat because your help will go further. Over the course of a year, your cat pen could be home to a succession of needy cats and kittens, helping them on their way to a permanent home.

The benefits of sponsorship are that you will know that cats and kittens will have a safe and secure place to rest and recover from their traumas. We would also like to say thank you with a Sponsorship Certificate and will keep you up to date with news of the cats in your pen. If you feel that you can help us in this way please contact us on 01787 461264 for sponsorship forms.

Branch Membership

Why not show your support for the branch by becoming a branch member? You will receive a quarterly newsletter which gives details of branch activities, cat related stories, competitions etc. You will also receive details of forthcoming events. Just fill in the membership form and send it to the Membership Secretary to receive your membership card. Click here for membership form
